Why These Dogs?
Dogs have been known to heal, soothe and comfort. They have been able to act as our eyes, ears, friends, guides and protectors since the beginning of time. So what makes these dogs any different? Perhaps it is simply the environment in which they live - co-existing peacefully (yes we said peacefully!) with over 100 dogs in a dog-mushing tour environment. Or, the way they rise to the challenge and give their all during the arduous Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race. For us, it was simply seeing the sheer joy the dogs express when Frank comes into view and the way they stop and listen to his voice… that told us there is something special here!
Why Muktuk Adventures?
Muktuk Adventures is a reputable Tour Company, owned by Frank Turner who has been a long-time distance competitive musher for almost thirty years, a Yukon Quest champion, widely recognized for excellent dog care. Frank would be the first to say that it is his team of canine friends and dedicated individuals that have built Muktuk Adventures into a reputable company known worldwide.
Why Frank Turner?
Frank is the only person to have participated in all (but one) of the
Yukon Quest International Sled Dog races. Together, Frank and his teams
have lived through some harrowing experiences – experiences that have
taught him about leadership and working as a team.
Frank has always placed great importance on achieving a balance between race competition and care of the dogs. In 1995, Frank won the Quest, finishing with 10 dogs – the largest team among the top five finishers. What’s more, the team finished in record time – 10 days 16 hours and 22 minutes. That record remained unchallenged for 12 years.
Twice, Frank received the Alyesku Pipeline Vet's Choice Award, a highly respected award given for superior care of dogs during the race. On many other occasions since, he has received recognition for excellent and humane care of his dogs.
Frank has a BA through the University of Guelph and Masters of Social Work through Wilfred University, Waterloo.
Frank spent several years working with the Selkirk First Nation in management development and capacity building.
Frank’s natural ability to communicate in a way that people can understand has resulted in speaking engagements locally, nationally and internationally.
He is a genuine individual who cares and wants to share his experiences to the benefit of others … a true attribute of a leader and team-player!
